How It Feels to Be Colored Me

I think that Hurston has a good perspective on things. I know that I grown annoyed hearing people distinguish people by race. Many (black and white) refer to men who are black a "black man," while the white man is just referred to as "man." This kind of upsets me. When will we be able to look at people without looking at their skin? I appreicated Hurston's words, "But I am not tragically colored." She also noted, "I do not always feel colored." Anyone have any other thoughts? I'm interested in any thoughts concerning Hurston's perspective on race.

Ha. This woman is sweet. First of all, she writes with so much confidence it brings a smile to my face. Next, she loads this essay with so many analogies. I get what she's saying, and I'm with her. I loved how she described how her "color comes" in certain situations, like at The New World Cabaret. The way she described the impact that the music had on her is what most of us would call Soul. She could feel the music in her bones and in her chest while her white friend merely drums his fingers to the beat. She is not saying that white people can't enjoy music, but that there are specific times when she feels her ethnicity racing through her body and she's proud of it. She sees her value as a human being instead of a race or background. "How can any deny themselves the pleasure of my company? It's beyond me." She has an incredible attitude and celebrates her racial differences. I loved this essay.

I like this woman, too. She knows who she is, sees her value, and recognizes the loss others encounter by refusing to associate with a "colored" person.

This demeanor among people goes further than skin color. It is with anything that makes us different: age, intelligence, weight, etc. Unfortunately, people find ways to disassociate with those that are not "like them." What they do not get is no one is "like them" completely, and they are missing many opportunities. God's word tells us to be careful how we treat people, it just may be an angel.
